Re: The Losing Streak

Dear The Print,

I would like to write to raise a concern regarding this recent column about sport teams at CIS. Whilst it clearly sought to interrogate the current culture in a provocative fashion, it perhaps made a couple of mis-steps.

Firstly, singling out specific results served to detract from the wider argument. I know this made many members of those respective teams uncomfortable, if not angry. I can understand their feelings, as the choice of results and sports seemed arbitrary to say the least.

Secondly, I think you failed to take advantage of opportunities to research and find out how the teams themselves feel about their recent season. Assuming somebody’s experience could not be ‘fulfilling’, or they feel ‘inferior’ simply because they are losing, feels like an over-simplification.

There are legitimate points to be made about how CIS organises its sports teams, but I don’t think it should be focused on whether we win or lose. I would encourage you to research and write a follow-up article that presents a broader perspective.

Well done on all your hard journalistic work this year.

Regards,
Mr. Anderson
