Amsterdam (2022), directed by David O. Russell, is a film that discusses the notions of love and the pain of society as a whole while simultaneously telling an engaging and complex story, making this film, one among many wonders by Russell.
Having other films in his repertoire such as American Hustle (2013) and Joy (2015), Amsterdam is no exception to Russell’s expertise, following his signature style of intricate storylines, interwoven with messages of mental health, love, family, and relationships.
Amsterdam is about three friends who met during the first world war, and how they get each other into and out of trouble. It starts with a homicide, which turns out to reveal more about their own relationships, the society they live in, and its leaders.
The story jumps through time, going through the background of each of the protagonists, which some critics say makes the story convoluted and incomprehensible. I disagree as I believe the point of a good film is to capture your attention and to use your mind to understand things for yourself. The star cast is also commendable for their performances in the film, and I believe that Russell could not have chosen three people more fitting for these roles. Christian Bale portrays Dr. Burt Berendson, a man who has been through a lot of pain and has almost given up on love. Margot Robbie portrays Valerie Voze, a confident, artistic nurse with a helpful soul. Lastly, John Washington portrays Harold Woodman, a passionate social activist with a strong sense of fairness, determination, and conviction.
The addition of Dr. Berendson’s monologue at the end of the film was one of the best choices that Russell had made. It gives the film a soul, and connects to the audience at the last second of suspense, evoking a beautiful mix of emotions within our minds, and our hearts.
Overall, if you want a film where the director walks you through every step of the story, this is not the movie you’d want to watch. However, if you enjoy a suspenseful and complex storyline, while still feeling the tender and heartfelt emotions of the protagonists, then Amsterdam should be #1 on your watch list.
